Tramlining

Oh shitttt… its Kingsway bloody tram tunnel the epitome of MEH….!? This one has been on the radar for years yet it seems to have appeared on many a blog in the last month or so.. I actually quite like it, its quick and easy, nice bit of history, nice and photogenic. Whats not to like?

The tunnel was excavated by the London City Council between 1902-1905 and originally linked north and south tram systems running from Embankment to Theobald’s Road

The southern half of the tunnel was reused as the Strand underpass in the late 1950s but the south portal remained untill a few years ago when it was converted to a bar..

The Union Street name originates from when the tunnel was used for filming, the single remaining station in the tunnel was actually named Holborn, the grimy shadow of the stations original roundels can be seen under the ‘fo’ prop signs..

Trams were abandoned in London on 5 July 1952
